Calendar FAQ

Q: What can I do with the calendar?

With the calendar on the home page or any of the calendars linked on this page, you can...

  • Bookmark it, and come back and check it whenever
  • Change the date with the navigation controls on the upper left
  • Change the view to day/week/month with the tabs on the upper right
  • Check/uncheck calendars displayed with the dropdown on the very upper right
  • Click on any event for a popup with a little more info
  • Click on "more details" for a full-page view of that event

Q: I'm a parent; which calendar do I want?

You want the "Club+Council" calendar for your church. That will show you events particular to your club (like weekly meetings), as well as council-wide cadet events (like Field Day)

Q: I'm a counselor; which calendar do I want?

You want the "Club+Council+Counselor" calendar for your church. That will show you all the events the parents are seeing, plus events relative to counselors (like Council meetings)

Q: I'm just a regular Joe. How can I get an event added to a calendar?

Send an email to webdude@socalcadets.org. Better yet, write the details of your event on a $20-bill...

Q: I'm super-special and have been given access to a calendar; how can I edit it?

If you will be regularly adding events to a calendar, send an email to webdude@socalcadets.org, and I can send you an invitation to be able to edit a calendar. In order to receive an invitation to edit a calendar, you need to have or get a Google account. Then you can add new events to the calendar by simply clicking on a date, selecting the appropriate calendar in the dropdown, and filling in the details. The changes you make will be reflected in the embedded public calendars in the above links, and will be visible to all other subscribers of that calendar.

Q: How can I put a good map into an event?

Make sure the "Where" field for your event has a valid street address that Google Maps can resolve. Test your map link to make sure! If you just put an abbreviation like "NLPCA" or "Escondido URC" in the "Location" box, Google Maps will not understand, and somebody might get sent to who knows where! You can put "Event@EscoURC" in the "What" box, but the "Where" box needs a valid street address.

Q: How can I get calendars posted for my club?

Here's the process:

  • Have/get a Google account
  • Go to calendar.google.com and log in.
  • Under "My Calendars", click "create"
  • Check "Make this calendar public"
  • Under "Share," enter the email address webdude@socalcadets.org
  • Also set to "Make changes AND manage sharing"
  • Click "Add Person" (you can invite me to Gmail)
  • Before long, I will post links to your calendar on this page.
  • Meanwhile, you can start editing your calendar for all the world to share.
Or, if that sounds like too much hassle, just email me, I can set you up a new calendar, give you access to edit it, and post links to it. All you have to do is start editing!

Q: How can I share a calendar with counselors/parents in my club?

I would recommend sending them an email with a link to this page (http://socalcadets.org/Calendar/FAQ.htm), or a printout of this page.

Q: How can I use the calendar in Google?

If you have a Google account (if you use gmail, same thing), then you have a Google Calendar account. You can click on the "+GoogleCalendar" button at the lower-right of any calendar to subscribe to the calendar. If you click on "more details" for any event, on the right side, you can "add a reminder", which will send you reminder emails.

Q: How can I use the calendar in Yahoo!

If you use Yahoo! email instead of gmail, you can subscribe to public Google calendars that are broadcast via ICS links. First off, you need to switch to Yahoo's calendar beta. Then you can subscribe to a calendar, using the appropriate "ICS" link in the table above. (You can copy the ICS link by right-clicking on "ICS" and looking for "Copy Link" or "Copy Address"; then paste it into Yahoo!)

Q: How can I use the calendar with other systems?

There are many kinds of software that can subscribe to an ICS link. Poke around to see if you can do something like above, for Yahoo!
